Funko animated film in development at Warner Bros. animation
------------------------------------------------------------
Deadline is reporting that a Funko animated movie is currently
in development from Warner Animation Group after the Warner
Bros. optioned the rights to the collectible figures.
"We're thrilled for this opportunity and are committed to make
an amazing Funko movie that stands on its own merit. This
isn't about selling toys or building a brand. The team at
Warner Animation Group have a unique vision of what the first
film should be and we are extremely excited to take this
journey alongside them," said Funko CEO Brian Mariotti.
Funko and the studio have partnered for nearly 20 years on
licensed collectibles from popular franchises. This will mark
the first time the two companies will venture into the
movie-making business together.
Executive Vice President of Warner Animation Group Allison
Abbate said that the Funko's "fresh take on Pop culture" makes
the figurines "incredibly appealing to fans of all ages."
Abbate will manage the partnership on behalf of Warner Bros.
Oscar-nominee Teddy Newton (Day & Night) is developing the
story with director Mark Dindal (Chicken Little, The Emperor's
New Groove, Garfield) also on board the project.
Hmmm ... "This isn't about selling toys or building a brand." Err, yes
it is. It's also about dragging the barrel bottom to find something
else they can use as a knock-off of the Lego movies, especailly since
Playmobil is already taken.
